"Zenadth Kes" (pronounced zen-ath kes) is a term that was created by the late Mr Ephraim Bani, a Torres Strait Elder and linguist who sought to redefine the European name for the region (the Torres Strait) which was named after the Spanish navigator Luis Vaez de Torres who sailed through the area in 1606. The term ‘Zenadth Kes’ is an amalgamation of Torres Strait language names for the four winds that pass through the region.1 We have received permission from Uncle Gabriel Bani to use the term in our business name.
Our logo uses the two first letters of this term to make a ZK shape. The colours align with those on the Torres Strait Islander Flag. This flag's design is attributed to the late Bernard Namok of Thursday Island. The flag features a white Dhari (traditional headdress), with a five-pointed white star beneath it. The white five-pointed star symbolises peace and also represents the five distinct language and cultural groups of the region. The deep green stripe represents the land, the black stripe is for the people, and the blue is the colour of our seas.2
